Hello MUBI

Cover Letter - Senior Editorial Designer

Dear MUBI team,

I would like to be considered for the Senior Editorial Designer position as advertised.

With a passion for all forms of creative storytelling, and 10 years of experience in editorial and visual communication design spaces — I believe I would be suitable for this role and contribute creative and fresh ideas to the publishing projects and ventures at MUBI.

In my current role at BBC News, I am digital lead for a team of designers creating visual identities for news events such as Elections and crafting promotion artwork for featured stories on the news website.

I started as an editorial designer in 2016 working on data visualisation content in the ‘Visual Journalism’ team, helping our viewers better digest and understand complex news content and data through maps and charts. Working closely with visual and data journalists, as well as software developers when publishing interactive content. I became a Senior designer in 2018 and took on a leadership and management role helping designers in the team develop, design and deliver work across our News platforms.

I am an advocate for sharing knowledge and ensuring the professional growth of those around me are cultivated and celebrated. I enjoy providing constructive feedback, delegating tasks, and fostering a creative environment as much as doing the creative work itself. My organisational skills and ability to problem-solve independently has helped me work efficiently in fast-paced working environments.

I thoroughly enjoy the problem solving element of Design and finding creative ways to balance beautiful looking work with clear and informative content. Constraints can be a great conduit for creativity, and have always enjoyed a good design challenge, and working under pressure.

I have extensive experience with design tools such as InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, as well as Figma having worked across print and digital projects over the years, with a huge obsession with typography and print design. I’m confident in my ability to learn new tools and software and have always enjoyed picking up new skills and refining my own abilities.

Outside of the 9-5 I am an avid coffee drinker, I recently picked up my first 35mm film camera and have been playing around with that as of recent, also dabble in filming and video editing on the side. I love the art of making and finding ways to tell stories with different medium and art forms.

I am excited about the possibility of joining MUBI, where I can contribute to a company that I admire both professionally and personally; and be part of the overall mission of bringing ambitious and unique film and art to the masses.

I would love the opportunity to further discuss how my background, skills, and passion for design and film can contribute to MUBI’s creative initiatives. I hope you’ll consider my my application, and please check out the relevant projects and favourite films section below to find out more.

Best,
Joy Roxas
